Description: Heading north from Livingston, the route travels up the Shields Valley on a mix of paved and gravel roads. The Crazy Mountains, a beautiful island range to the east, are your companion as you work your way north. At the end of the valley, the route enters a section of the Lewis and Clark National Forest as it climbs up and over the Castle Mountains on steep and challenging dirt roads. Once over the Castles, be sure to stop in at the Checkerboard Bar and Cabins for some cold drinks and food. Next up is a long traverse of the Little Belt mountains and then the Highwood Mountains before dropping down into the start of the Montana prairie. This section ends in historic Fort Benton along the banks of the Missouri River. There is camping at the Canoe Launch campground.
