Endpoints: Fort Benton, MT – Minifred, MT

Length: 131.7 miles. Unpaved 93%, paved 7%.

Elevation Gain: 6,528 feet

Description: There is a short, paved climb out of Fort Benton. Once out of the river valley and on the prairie, riders will begin to experience the expansiveness of the Big Sky state. The route zig zags north and east towards the Virgelle Ferry where you will cross the Missouri on the first of this section’s two ferry crossings. Be sure to ask if there are any homemade baked treats available from the ferry operator. Once across the Mighty MO, you ride past the Virgelle Mercantile, with cold drinks and ice cream. There is camping along the river just down the road at the Coal Banks Landing Campground. From here it’s mostly gravel roads into the town of Big Sandy where there is a motel, bar and grocery store. After Big Sandy it’s a long and rolling ride on gravel roads before the route makes a dramatic descent into the Missouri River Breaks National Monument and the second ferry crossing at the Stafford Ferry. There is camping with a pit toilet at the ferry crossing but no potable water. After enjoying the ferry ride be prepared for a sustained section of hike-a-bike as the route climbs back out of the river valley. The section ends in Winifred, which has a well-stocked small store, a hotel with a bunk room option, a bar and camping available in the city park.
