Tents along the river on the fort Benton section of the Montana Trail
Credit: Race

Endpoints: Fort Benton – Kips Landing (Wild and Scenic Missouri)

Length: 149 miles on the river

Description: This section of trail is intended to be experienced from the water. The River Trail takes you down the Upper Missouri National Wild and Scenic River to James Kipp Landing. Boaters also experience The Upper Missouri River National Monument including the White Cliffs area. Permits are required depending on the departure date. Floaters need to pack their own water on the trip as it is not encouraged to drink water from the Missouri River because of agricultural run-off. Potable water is available at Fort Benton, Coal Bank Landing and the James Kipp Recreational Area.
